2013 Review: Palmetto Corp In the News!
2013 has been a great year for local and national PR coverage for Palmetto Corp. Here are just a few of this year’s best stories:
Pavement Magazine’s Top Paving Contractors
Grant Thornton 100 – Palmetto Corp was once again named one of South Carolina’s largest privately held companies. The 2013 list is not available online yet, but you can view last year’s list here.
Construction begins on a new bike path in Pawleys Island – The Sun News
Ongoing Palmetto Corp SCDOT Jobs
Our crews have started construction on the below large DOT projects listed below and will be hard at work at them over the next year. Keep an eye out for us on the road, and please be safe in construction zones!
Highway 501 Widening
Palmetto Corp’s crews started road construction on the widening of Highway 501 in October and everything is progressing smoothly. The project will add a third lane to a 2.1 mile stretch of the northbound lanes of Highway 501 from Tanger outlets to Garner Lacey Roadd. Much of the construction to date has not interrupted traffic flow, as our crews have been laying pipe and grading in preparation for the new lane, which all takes place on the shoulder of the road. When we do need to encroach on the existing road, we wait until night time to perform that work.
Pawleys Island Bike Path
Pawleys Island residents are excited to see construction on a new three mile bike path along Kings River Road and Waverly Road. This will be a asphalt-paved bikeway with a bike bridge and is funded by federal grants, private donors, the Safe Routes to School grant, and the SC DOT and Federal Highway Administration. Construction began in October 2013 and should be completed around the same time next year. Read The Sun News’ story here.
Highway 52 Widening (Darlington)
Our crews are working on widening Highway 52 in Darlington from a two lane roadway to a four lane divided section. This widening project stretches five miles from US 52 BS in Darlington to S-41 in Dovesville and includes a bridge replacement over Black Creek.
Alice Drive (Sumter)
Our crews are also widening Alice Drive in Sumter from Wise Dr (S-380) to Westmark Blvd (S-1074). This is a very busy area of Sumter, so the new widened road will be a relief for Sumter area drivers.
Road Grading – Highway 17A
We are in the final stages of our road grading project in Monks Corner on Highway 17A. Palmetto Corp was contracted to doing the grading portion of widening the road from a two-lane road to a four-lane road. This project covers roughly eight miles of 17A and will certainly ease some of the traffic in the area once it is complete!

New Parking Lot – Lackey Chapel, Coastal Carolina University
This past summer we partnered with our friends at CL Benton & Sons in installing a new parking lot behind Lackey Chapel at Coastal Carolina University. With the completion of this new parking lot, Coastal students returned to campus this fall to over 500 additional parking spaces. This additional space is essential for a growing university like CCU.

Seal Coat Job – Barefoot Resort & Dye Club
We recently partnered with the teams at Barefoot Resort and the Dye club to seal coat their properties. We seal coated the parking lot at the Barefoot Resort golf club house and the road leading to the Dye Club clubhouse, as well as the clubhouse and Wyndham parking lots. Once the customer saw how good the initial job went, they signed on for more! As is the case with all of our jobs, we worked with our customers around their schedule and made sure they and their customers were inconvenienced as little as possible.
Seal coating a parking lot or neighborhood streets is a great way to preserve and protect asphalt from cracks and potholes. We have some customers that seal coat their lots every year, both for maintenance and appearance purposes.
